Our PHSE and Citizenship courses allow young people to use their imagination when considering other people's experiences and to reflect on this process of participation. Postal Address: Apollo House, 66A London Road, Morden, Surrey SM4 5BE

Brief Description

The purpose of the resource is to provide lesson activities that offer a variety of ways to explore the issues surrounding gang culture and break down the myths associated with gang membership. It also addresses the realities of gun crime, looking at the responsibilities pupils have as citizens to reduce and prevent crime in their community.
This resource was developed as part of Crimestoppers’ National Gun Crime Campaign, running in September 2004. However Respect is still available and still relevant.
The lessons involve elements of other subjects in the curriculum to develop cross-curricular links, but they are planned from a citizenship perspective and are intended to be delivered in these or PHSE lessons. Teachers may wish to add or delete to the plans given, but they should serve as a valuable starting point.
Crimestoppers operates the 0800 555 111 number for people to give information about crime. Frequently, young people will see or know something about crime in their area but for understandable reasons will not want to contact the police and get involved. We want more young people to know about Crimestoppers so they are informed of the choices available to them. Through this resource we feel this can be achieved.

The resource includes an A2 Crimestoppers poster to display in your school, 3 photocopiable pupil worksheets, and information for teachers.

Brief Description:

'SPLIT SECOND is an exciting new resource pack tackling the issue of young people carrying replica guns and engaging in anti-social behaviour with them, or with other offensive weapons. Many young people are fascinated with firearms and it has become 'cool' to carry or be seen with a 'toy gun'. These toys or replica firearms are very easily purchased and look almost identical to the real thing. In many instances, not even a trained firearms professional can tell the difference without physically examining the gun.

Incidents of young people seen with a firearm are an ever-increasing problem for police forces across the country. Many of the reported incidents require and are given an armed police responce. The consequences of such a response could prove lethal. In an effort to address the dangers and consequences of young people carrying replica firearms or other offensive weapons and becoming involved in anti-social behaviour, Leicestershire Constabulary have produced a dynamic and engaging video/DVD resource. The resource pack contains a video or DVD designed for use by teachers, police officers, youth worker and other professionals working with young people and is accompanied by a comprehensive teacher guide and notes. Crimestoppers 'RESPECT' materials are also included in the pack.

What training do you provide to accompany the material?

None. The resource pack is completely userfriendly with full teacher guide, notes and exercises.

What material is available?

Either a Video or DVD film accompanied with teacher guide and notes. Photocopiable exercise and handouts. Crimestoppers 'Respect' campaign materials.

What evaluation have you carried out?

The resource has been piloted in a Leicestershire school and has recieved excellent feedback. The resource is being included in a new 'Law & Order' module for the Citizenship Curriculum in Leicestershire schools and a resource is being sent to every secondary school throughout Leicester City, Leicester County and Rutland. A full evaluation will be carried out in March 2006.
